permutationofninjas has spoke at length about this issue and both him and I have similar view point. This is the main pro-life argument.
1. A foetus is a human life.
2. Taking a human life constitutes murder.
3. Murder is wrong.
4. Therefore abortion should be illegal.
We are both pro choice because we disagree with premise 1, a bundle of cells is no more a human than an apple seed is a tree. However IF the pro-lifers were right about it then their conclusion would be correct. I’m WELL aware of the usual outcome of prohibition laws and this may well be a valid argument in and of itself against making abortion illegal but saying “it’s all about choice” is NOT a valid argument against the claim that “a foetus deserves human rights”.
Yes there are plenty of times when body autonomy arguments are a valid response, “abortion is murder” is not the only argument pro-lifers use they are often completely ignorant of other issues such as the fact that not all accidental pregnancies are the result of people not taking precautions but please think about what you are saying and use your arguments appropriately. As far as I see it the ONLY thing that matters is the question is it a life or isn’t it?
@restlesshippo But an apple seed does have the genetic material to grow in to an apple tree, your point is completely invalid. Defining a human as anything with a human genome is ridiculous by this logic ear-piercing should be illegal because you’ve killed skin cells which each contain a complete human genome..

Comparing fetuses to skin cells is a weak argument because skin cells are somatic cells which we all agree are not human beings. Fetuses are.

Apple seeds do not have a unique human genetic code and will not grow into a human being.
